A Proud Star Trek Tradition Since 1974

STARFLEET is the oldest continuously operating Star Trek Fan Organization in the world. Founded back in 1974, when there were only 79 original live-action Star Trek episodes and no movies yet, STARFLEET has grown over the years to thousands of members. We’re all about having fun, making friends, and keeping the ideals of Star Trek alive and healthy into the future.

cqcompopsThe news isn't just good...it's gr-r-r-r-r-r-eat!

The EC recently asked Membership Processing Administrator Matt Ingles to track our Fleet strength both before and after the release of the new Star Trek film on May 7th. Because memberships are usually processed a week after they come in (hey, good job to do it in just one week, guys!), Matt used a cut-off date of May 11th for the "before" snapshot of members. May 11th included memberships received up to one week previous (or May 4th), so that was our Fleet strength just PRIOR to the film's release: 3,342 members.

Then Matt took a snapshot at the end of May: 3,668 members!

That's a growth rate of 10% in just two and a half weeks!

To put it another way, we usually pick up 10-12 new members a week. We just picked up TEN TIMES that many!

Now, you could argue that recruiting during the release of the new movie is like shooting fish in a barrel. True. But we can't expect to just sit back on our hands and watch new members come to us. Many, many chapters worked super hard to recruit at theaters. STARFLEET itself and several chapters got really nice coverage in the media (InTheNews.sfi.org). In short, we did an awesome job as an organization and are now reaping the benefits.

In addition to new members, we've also seen a burst of renewals. And Matt Ingles reports that the trend is continuing. So far, the momentum is not slowing down. In other words, STARFLEET seems to be riding a very nice wave...so keep up the great work, everyone. Now that we've recruited 'em, the trick is to keep 'em around.

And speaking of Matt, I'm including his report to the Fleet below...with numbers for each region and the answer to that question I know you're all secretly asking, "Which chapters recruited the most new members?" :-)

So without further ado, heeeeere's Matt...!

Many of the new members we have picked up are currently listed as unassigned in their particular region because they did not sign up for a chapter; so if you know a new member who has joined but is not showing up on your roster, please contact me and we can help get them assigned correctly, I would urge the RCs to review their unassigned list to see if you cannot get some of these folks to join your chapters.

Regional Total Membership Numbers

Region May 11th May 30th
R1 625 682
R2 476 546
R3 347 378
R4 273 299
R5 206 238
R6 86 86
R7 397 439
R8 21 21
R9 53 55
R10 55 57
R11 63 61
R12 304 332
R13 38 39
R14 6 6
R15 179 186
R17 201 221
R20 10 18
In Process 2 8
Total 3,342 3,668

And there are still a large number of applicants that we are working with to complete/correct applications so we can process them...so in the next few weeks, we should continue to see membership numbers going up.

At the chapter level, it appears most chapters that gained members did so in 1's or 2's. However, there were a few with increases in the double digits: in R3, USS Corsair increased their membership by 10; in R5, the Thermopylae also increased by 10; in R1, the Star League increased membership by 11; and in R2, the USS Republic increased its membership by 30!! The Republic has more NEW members than any other chapter in R2 has members, and indeed, there are only a small handful of chapters Fleet wide with more then 30 members in the chapter. The Republic's total membership count is now at 86 (the next closest chapter is the Thermopylae at 53). In fact, the Republic's 86 members makes them the same size or even larger then eight whole Regions!!
